The United States banned the use of asbestos in building materials and  other applications in 1989. But the courts partially overturned the ruling, allowing continued use of products manufactured with this deadly fiber before 1989.

Deaths Continue

Even with all our knowledge, deaths from asbestos continue. Today an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 people die each year from exposure (Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER), Multiple Causes of Mortality files. Center for Disease Control, http://wonder.cdc.gov/mcd.html, queried March, 2015).

Its Use

In the mid-1970’s more than 3,000 products for industrial and consumer markets contained asbestos. Its fibrous dust spewed from factories. Construction, marine, and other workers remained continually exposed and carried the dust home in their clothes, exposing thousands more people.

Asbestos products  touched all our lives. Some of its many uses include insulating our homes, cement,  flooring materials,  heat resistant tapes,  soundproofing and fireproofing,  paints,  window caulking materials, and many other areas of daily use.

Exposure to asbestos continues today, when we disturb it. Considering replacing an old linoleum floor, scraping old paint off a wall, replacing windows, or crawling around in that old attic? Those activities disturb and release toxic fibers into the air we breathe.

Many people put themselves in harm’s way every day. Local firefighters enter buildings laden with asbestos dust. A person employed in the marine industry becomes exposed during repair and maintenance activities. Old hospitals, schools, government buildings, and thousands of homes present the potential of exposing workers and families.
